Student's Tips for Succeeding in Mathematics
|
1. Only you can learn mathematics. – Your teacher cannot MAKE you learn math. You must want to learn and work every day in order to master mathematics. |
2. Bring supplies with you everyday. – Homework, notebook, text, pencil and calculator are items that are essential. Without them you will be unable to fully participate in class. So bring them with you. |
3. Be there or be Square. – Everyday is important in math class. New topics are introduced and related to prior knowledge. You are responsible for what is covered in your absence, and it is much easier to learn with the teacher’s help. Hint: keep an assignment book, and contact the teacher or call a friend as soon as possible to find out what you missed. |
4. Listen in class. – To be successful, you will need to focus on the math lesson being taught in your classroom. Save conversations with friends for another time and follow the behavior your teacher expects of you. Listen to your teacher’s explanations and the questions asked by students. Make sure you understand all directions and write down assignments. |
5. Take notes and copy down examples. – When your teacher explains ideas, examples will be given for you to follow. Copy these examples and ask questions about what you do not understand. It is your responsibility to have some written information to use at homework time. All of us succeed more when we listen, read, and write, so be sure you have notes to review. A complete, well-organized notebook is like taking a math tutor home with you. |
6. Use class time to learn mathematics. – To make the most of your math opportunities, you need to use your class time wisely. Be ready to work when the bell rings. Have your book open and your homework out. Participate in class activities, and listen to the teacher’s explanations instead of trying to work ahead. To avoid getting behind in math, use the work time you are given in class to work ONLY on your math homework. |
7. Complete your homework every day. – Doing your homework to the best of your ability everyday is the single most important activity for success in mathematics. Your homework is your responsibility and your practice time. Find enough time outside of class every day to finish all assignments. Skipping assignments makes new material more difficult to understand. Always complete your homework in an honest manner. The solutions in the back of the book are there for you to check some of your answers, not for you to copy without doing any work. Always show your work. |
8. Ask your teacher for help at the first sign of trouble. – Your teacher wants you to be successful in math and will provide clear explanations, guided practice, and appropriate homework assignments. If you can’t get your questions answered during class, come in for help before or after school. Your teacher is a resource. Use that resource. |
9. Cooperate with your teacher and keep a positive attitude. – Do your part to make your math class an enjoyable learning environment. Follow rules and be open to new ideas and suggestions. Be willing to work with others and accept help when needed. You are responsible for how you behave and appropriate behavior can greatly increase your chances of learning what is being taught. |
